THE Matatiele Local Municipality and the Department of Education in Alfred Nzo West District awarded outstanding matriculants at an event held in Maluti Civic Centre on February 1.

The Alfred Nzo West District achieved fifth position in the Eastern Cape with a matric pass rate of 67,3%. Through the Special Programmes Unit under the Matatiele Municipality, disadvantaged pupils were helped with registration fees to further education at higher education institutions.

The municipality is in the process of assisting many less-privileged pupils with bursaries to do agricultural science and town/urban planning.

Between the financial years of 2012 and 2013, 10 pupils have been helped to pursue their studies in agricultural science, electrical engineering and accounting.

At the event, Matatiele Municipality Mayor Momelezi Mbedla encouraged teachers not to lose focus, adding that teachers must continue producing good results at schools.

“The spirit of hard work, honesty, sacrifice and selfless is what is needed in schools. Pupils who did not pass matric need to work harder this year so as to make us proud,” said Mbedla.

Matric pupil Amenta Sibi from King Edward High passed with seven distinctions.

Speakers applauded Mthobisi Senior Secondary School for improving from 10% in 2016 to above 50% last year.
