Municipality suspends traffic cop

2018-04-20 06:00

MATATIELE Municipality has suspended a 31-year-old traffic cop for allegedly being involved in a business robbery case, together with two other men aged 22 and 38.

Municipal Communications and Special Programmes Unit manager, Olwethu Gwanya confirmed the suspension of the traffic officer on Wednesday and said his criminal record was clean at the time of engagement with the municipality.

“The municipality views the above allegations as very serious because it puts the institution into disrepute”, said Gwanya.

The traffic officer and two men were arrested for allegedly being involved in a business robbery that happened at Mkhamane village on March 25.

SAPS said shop owners were robbed at gunpoint and money and cigarettes were stolen and discovered after the police chased them.

Police discovered an unlawful firearm with ammunition and stolen property from the men and charged them for robbery and possession of suspected stolen property.

“This is a serious incident that contravenes the objectives of Local Government as per Section 152 (1d) i.e to promote a stable and healthy environment.

“As Matatiele Local Municipality leadership we remain committed to clean governance and provision of a healthy work environment for all staff and the communities,” said Matatiele Local Municipality Mayor, Momelezi Mbedla.

SAPS spokesperson, Captain Raphael Motloung said police who responded during the business robbery were given certificates of commendation by SAPS for their quick response.

“Our police members arrested the suspects quickly and they managed to discover stolen goods including a vehicle that was used during the robbery and we are happy about their dedication”, said Motloung.

All men including a traffic officer were scheduled to apply for bail at the Maluti Magistrate’s Court on April 4. Attempts to get outcomes of bail applications failed during the time of going to printing.
