A COMMUNITY meeting organised by Greater Kokstad Municipality was under tight protection by members of Public Order Police and private security guards in and around JJ Mhlongo Hall in Horseshoe last Thursday.

The meeting was held to present an IDP and the election of ward committee members. It was the second one to be held after elections in August.
The first meeting was disrupted by community members claiming that it had not been organised properly.

GKM speaker, Zolani Mhlongo, ward councillor Nonyamezelo Lusawana, councillors and senior municipality officials attended this second meeting.

A community member Eric Nkamba demanded answers from speaker Mhlongo about a letter that was sent to the municipality on 28 September.
The letter was written by Ward 1 Concerned Residents asking for the removal of Ward 1 Councillor Lusawana as councillor claiming she didn’t win in the August elections.

Mhlongo replied saying that people must accept Lusawana as their ward councillor until 2021.

One group at the meeting, who were happy with her, shouted that she wasn’t going anywhere because she was voted in by the majority. However, another group voiced their happiness with her being the ward councillor.

The municipality promised to build RDP houses and sport grounds in the area.

“Police and security guards were called to make sure that the meeting was not disrupted,” said Nyaniso Msiya from the municipality.

A total of 10 community members were elected as ward committee members.
