Municipality uplifts youth with tourism-focused skills training

TO help young people contribute to tourism, the Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma Municipality has created opportunities for 18 to 35 year olds who to receive skills upliftment.

The youth will be given tourism and hospitality training for the duration of eight weeks, and a year.

The 15 young people are required to engage in a beauty therapy course for a duration of eight weeks.

In the same programme, 30 young people will be provided food and beverage training for a year and be awarded certificates for use in the job market.

Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma Municipal senior tourism officer Andile Zwezwe said the programme focuses on unemployed youth who are interested in tourism and hospitality.

“We want young entrepreneurs and tourism aspirants that will promote the municipality to the world.

“The municipality is running this programme and is supported by Tourism World and the Department of Tourism,” said Zwezwe.

Underberg town benefits from the natural beauty of the Southern Drakensberg Mountains, holiday resorts and rock art locations.

People also use the town to cross to Lesotho and that contributes to local economic growth.

Zwezwe said pupils must take up careers in tourism and study geography and hospitality in school as tourism can provide lots of opportunities that can change the lives of young people.
