Muthi child still suffering

2018-06-01 06:00

AFTER enduring incredible hardships from a very young age, an eight year old girl from Matatiele’s suffering has seen no end as she continues to experience hurling insults and all sorts of humiliation in her everyday life.

Reanetse Jabare (8) from the Harry Gwala Park settlement in Matatiele’s hard-life started when she was allegedly sold to her attacker by her relative for R300 as a nine month old baby.

The attacker allegedly mutilated her, cutting off her eyes, lips, ears and nose for muthi. After slicing off parts of her face, and two fingers from her left hand, the suspect wrapped the screaming child in blankets and set her alight.

Her screams however caught the attention of another child, who raised the alarm of neighbours.

Miraculously, the severely injured Jabare survived her horrifying ordeal in September 2011, but today bears the terrible scars as a residue.

However, although many politicians, non-governmental organisations and Matatiele Local Municipality made a lot of efforts to help her after the Fever published a story in 2011 to try and get her a hospital for specialised treatment, Jabare has still not undergone the sufficient surgery to re-build her face.

“I am suffer a lot on a daily basis from humiliation and I don’t know what I have done wrong in this world. At school other pupils insult me daily saying that I look like a “ghost” and I have a hole in my nose” said Jabase.

She said even when she plays with other children outside school they always calls her names and she questions why God brought her to this world.

“It is difficult to cope with my studies at school because other pupils always bully me” said the young lady in tears.

Her eldest sister, Matshidiso Jabare, who stays with her, said Reanetse was attacked after their mother was admitted to Hospital and left her in the care of a relative in 2011 and her father had been away on work.

“Reanetsi was under the care of a relative who sold her for muthi to her boyfriend and she confessed to us that she sold her to her boyfriend because he said the baby was so beautiful and she even confessed to the police” said Matshidiso.

She said just after her sister was attacked, the attacker fled to Durban, taking with him the stolen body parts.

Matshidiso said, Reanetsi, sometimes does not want to go to school because she is scared of other pupils and she always felt embarrassed. She said she was in grade one although supposed to be in grade two but failed grade one last year due to the difficulties she faces in her young life.

“I bought a hat for her to cover her head at school, but daily she comes home crying because of other pupils” said Matshidiso.

She said the attacker is still in Durban and the relative who sold Reanetsi is still walking free at the streets of the township of Matatiele.

“Both were arrested in 2012 and they were free without knew what was happening on their case” said Matshidiso.

Eastern Cape Department of Education Spokesperson Malibongwe Mtima confirmed the incident. He said they already asked the department’s School Enrichment Program team to intervene in the abuse of Reanetsi by other pupils at school.

He asked society to play parental role to protect the Reanetsi.

Meanwhile National Prosecuting Authority could not reach for comment about Reanetsi case.
