National event returns to the South Coast

2018-08-03 06:00

THE National Enduro Championship will make a long-awaited return to the South Coast, with a blockbuster double header set to take place in Umzumbe on August 10 and August 11.

Hosted by the Natal WFO Enduro Association, rounds four and five of the national championship will be the first national enduros to be staged on the South Coast in over a decade and will double as the final stop of the regional championship.

The race will start and finish at The Park, a brand new venue boasting a top-class clubhouse and facilities, situated on the Van Tichelen farm. Umzumbe farmers Jean van Tichelen, Pete Beckett, Nick Frey and the Hendersons opened their land to the event with preparations set to start on Thursday, August 9. Being a public holiday, championship-chasing riders and their teams will have adequate time to set-up and finalise their preparations for what will be two tough days of racing.

The action will get underway on Friday, August 10, with round four — a 30-kilometre course with riders expected to complete five laps in a minimum of six-hours riding time.

The course — set by Greg and Dennis Henderson — is made up of tricky riverbeds, various up and downhills and entertaining riding sections that will test riders’ fitness, skill level and machinery.

“It’s very exciting to have an event of this stature on the South Coast,” commented Greg Henderson.

“We’ve hosted events like the Alfie Cox Invitational and Umzumbe Extreme in the past, but this is obviously a different format and, with it being a national and regional enduro, we’re a bit apprehensive because we know that a very high standard is expected. Having said that, we’re pulling out all the stops to give the riders a challenging course and we’re looking forward to a great event,” he said.

The evening’s prize-giving will be held at The Park where supper will be available and fires will be provided for a bring and braai. Prize-giving will commence at 6 pm.

Saturday, 11 August, sees round five of the national championship and round six of the regional championship take place on a 36-kilometre course consisting of portions of the previous day’s route with the addition of some new sections.

With many of the national and regional championships still hanging in the balance, the double header will have major bearing on who will be crowned champions in their respective classes.

The evening’s prize-giving will once again be held at The Park, where the winners of the regional championship will be announced and one lucky registered Natal WFO Enduro Association member will walk away with R50 000 — the biggest cash prize in the history of South African enduro.

The organisers encourage riders and their support crews to contact 082 412 7917 and 073 990 3698 for accommodation requirements in the area. To enter, and for more information, visit
