GREETINGS to residents and the community of Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma Municipality.

This has been one of the most difficult weeks in our municipal area of Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma.

On behalf of the municipality I would like to express condolences to the families of the deceased after a fatal crash on the R617 near Underberg.

A Toyota Tazz driver lost control and went under a truck, killing eight people. On Monday, another fatal crash, which claimed the lives of four, occurred on the same stretch of road - R617 - between Bulwer and Underberg.

It is alleged that the driver of a Hyundai lost control and overturned. All four victims died on the scene.

As the municipality we are concerned about the growing number of fatal crashes on the R617 and convey our condolences to the affected families. May God be with them at this difficult period.

Through our technical and public works department in the municipality our investment in roads and infrastructure is changing the way people access their place of work, study and entertainment.

Our traffic police working tirelessly every day to ensure law enforcement and that motorists adhere to the rules of the road.

One can see there is a need for more road blocks and random inspections along the R617 and we encourage people to take breaks and rest on their journey, as this helps many who travel from far and who might be tired.

As the municipality we are committed to ensuring that our roads are accessible and safe and we do this by regularly having road blocks along the R617 and maintaining access roads in our villages and towns.

The municipality is saddened by the death of Nkosinathi Ngcobo, an employee of our municipality.

Ngcobo was shot on Monday night and succumbed to the wounds. He was a willing worker, dedicated to his job. His presence will be missed.

We call upon the law enforcement agencies to pursue justice, and bring those behind this killing to book.

As the Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma Municipality we convey our condolences to the Ngcobo family, Nathi’s friends, colleagues and community.

Until next time, be blessed.
