Municipality bids farewell to long-serving officials

“YOU may not have changed the world, but you certainly have changed Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma Municipality and leave it a much better place.”

With these words, I, as the municipal manager, summed up this sentiment at a farewell function for the outgoing NDZ municipality staff, Alan Payne, Mr Van Rensberg, Lynn Mark, Susan McAlister, Ms Hlubi and Mr Donnelly at Bulwer Hall on Monday.

Although the atmosphere was jovial, an underlying tone of sadness was tangible in the room, where friends and colleagues gathered to bid their colleagues’ farewell and as I felt a sense of unity in my team.

Grown men found it hard to swallow the frog in their throat when talking about the years they had served with “real little powerhouses on high heels” in the name of Lynne Mark and Susan McAlister.

As the administration and staff of NDZ, we only have good stories to share about the colleagues and one of the traits about them is that they always had time for the people with whom they worked, irrespective of rank or stature.

Colleagues at the Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma Municipality today cannot write the story of their lives without devoting a chapter or two to Alan Payne, Lynne Mark, Sue Ransburg, Ms Hlubi and Mr Donnelly.

Colleagues, you have undoubtedly added value to our lives and the institution as a whole as well as the community of NDZ.

We all bear witness of fearless leadership, and you have displayed tremendous courage under fire. This also goes to Nonhlanhla Mohau who left the organisation last month. She was a pillar of strength and instrumental in driving the community services department, her contribution will never go unnoticed and we would like to take this opportunity to wish her well in all her future endeavours.

A new era, however, has dawned, a new chapter, a new season, a new journey has now begun, and within this new uncertainty, Scripture helps to sooth those things we cannot understand. The Psalm inspire us with these words, “Thy rod and thy staff comfort me”. (Psalm 23 verse 4.) It is evident that only the successes of the Israelites are encrypted and/or carved on the rod of Moses, all the victories, the best practices, the happy moments, the highlights, the clean audits, greenest town awards, the accolades and trophies.

As you enter a new season in life may you find comfort in your history, may your legacy be the fuel for your future, may you find rest in your achievements, and may you hear the Master’s voice in your heart saying: “Well done good and faithful servant, you have served your generation well.”

On behalf of the municipality we thank you for your contribution, dedication and loyalty in serving the people of Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma.
