GREETINGS to all Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma Municipality residents and the entire Harry Gwala District. We are proud to bring you this week view point, which is full of exciting news that took place over the historical weekend. This week we take this opportunity to celebrate one of our own, Bongumusa Mthembu. But, if winning the Comrades wasn’t enough, its Mthembu’s third win in the Comrades Marathon. History was made as another Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma Municipality resident, Nkosinathi Duma, closed the top 10 of the male winners in the Comrades 2018.

Mthembu won the Comrades Marathon for the first time in 2014 and again in 2017, becoming the second South African to win it twice in a row since ‘Comrades king’ Bruce Fordyce. This is his third win. Mthembu’s story is also pretty remarkable. Born in Bulwer in the rural area under the Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma Municipality, he started running at school. After matriculating, he left Bulwer to go to Pietermaritzburg.

In 2004, he started to enter a few races. By 2005, he had won the Maritzburg Marathon without any good training. This is an inspiring story for the whole country and for the people of NDZ municipality, in particular the young people, as the municipality we believe and support the notion that sport can be used as the vehicle to fight poverty, substance abuse as well as social ills. This is supported by our youth programmes that are directed to the youth in our municipality.

Mthembu is an ambassador of our municipality and therefore it is very important to ensure that what he has started does not end with him but through our support as well as other stakeholders support a lot will be done. The municipality held its youth day celebration event in style; we had a healthy dialogue session at the Himeville Community Hall, issues such as human rights, role of the youth in our society and challenges that the youth is faced with.

Our war rooms set the agenda for any programme that the municipality is planning and, as the Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma , we strongly believe in community participation, a development led by the people on the ground.

The construction of the roads in Underberg is underway, we are very optimistic and excited about these projects, that they will bring a new shape to our towns, thus enhancing or uplifting the towns’ appearance as a tourism destination. We appeal to our residents to be patient and advise where necessary in terms of development in their area as we practice an open door policy as NDZ municipality.
