New dawn for political killings probe

2018-08-17 06:00

MINISTER of Police, Bheki Cele, has appointed new members to the task team responsible for investigations into the political related killings in KwaZulu-Natal.

He briefed members of the media last Friday at a press conference held in Durban.

He said a team of 118 new members and eight from the previous task team has been retained to probe the cases.

“This team has now adopted a project-driven approach, meaning that they will have dedicated human and physical resources. The National Prosecuting Authority has dedicated 16 experienced and seasoned prosecutors, led by advocate Selepe, to support the investigating team to ensure effective case management and successful prosecutions,” he said.

He also said that, two weeks ago, six people were arrested in relation with the spate of political killings and two firearms that were recovered have already been linked to at least eight cases.

“We are satisfied with the work that this team has done so far. This team is expected to work independently, moving forward.”

He said he and National Commissioner of Police pronounced on the implementation of stabilisation interventions throughout the country after the country had been plagued by a number of crimes, including political killings in KZN.

He said, from June, KZN police have dealt decisively with criminal activities as they arrested 512 people for illegal possession of fire arms and ammunition, and seized 706 illegal guns, including semi-automatic rifles, high calibre rifles, shotguns, revolvers, pistols and home-made guns. He said 6045 rounds of ammunition were also taken off the streets. — Supplied.
