THE position of three Democratic Alliance councillors that have been vacant for two months were filled at a special council meeting last Thursday.

The council of Greater Kokstad Municipality welcomed Brandwyn Marnce, Leon Kotting, and Nomakhosazana Dumisa, who will occupy the vacant positions after three DA members left to join the ruling party.

Former DA member Lwanda Madikizela, Karen Walker and Ntandazo Cyprian Nyembezi joined the ANC in January without giving any reasons.

DA caucus leader in Kokstad Kotting told the Fever that being part of the council is going to help the party raise some of the problems that are escalating in Kokstad.

He said water supply by the district municipality is poor. He added that mismanagement and the financial state of The Greater Kokstad Municipality is poor and more needs to be done.

At a special council meeting, acting municipality manager Nyaniso Msiya said: “Because of challenges we were facing as the municipality, it took a long time to welcome you [DA councillors] as part of our council members.

Documents of how you are going to conduct yourself will be given to you.

The new DA councillors are going to occupy positions that were left by former members of DA.”

ANC councillor Ntobeko Mavuka asked speaker Zolani Mhlongo why acting manager Msiya does the honour instead of a magistrate.

“Let’s do things correctly. I don’t want us tomorrow to be questioned about what we are doing today,” Mavuka responded to council.

Mhlongo said to get a magistrate was a challenge because magistrates are busy.

“What we are doing today is legal. We are not the first council to grant the municipality manager of honouring new councillors.”

Other ANC councilors welcomed the three DA members.
