GOVERNMENT has pumped more money into upgrading gravel roads and building new bridges in Umzimkhulu.
A new bridge and upgraded roads were opened by the MEC of Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Mxolisi Kaunda in Umzimkhulu on Tuesday. A ribbon was cut to officiate the opening of Mfulamhle Bridge.

Kaunda, Harry Gwala District Municipality Mayor Mluleki Ndobe, Umzimkhulu Mayor Mphuthumi Mpabanga and dignitaries visited the upgraded P416, the Mfulamhle Bridge and the P749.

Kaunda said he is happy about the road upgrading because Umzimkhulu roads were in a bad state when it was ”moved” from the Eastern Cape to KZN.
“I am happy with the contractors who completed the road works in the area especially in rural areas. Many people, especially the youth and women, have been taught skills during the construction of roads,” said Kaunda.

The P749 is 45km long and connects Umzimkhulu and Riverside. The P416 is between Staffords Post and Droefheids Bron.
Mpabanga said the lives of people have now changed for the better in Umzimkhulu.
