New school to bring relief

2018-02-16 06:00

THE Department of Education (DoE) is addressing the problem of overcrowding in two no-fee-schools in Kokstad. The department has established Thembalethu High School in Bongweni to address the challenge of overcrowding of pupils in Shayamoya High and Carl Malcomess, which are no-fee-schools.

DoE Harry Gwala district director Sindi Zakuza-Njakazi confirmed that fabricated classrooms have been put on the site of the new school and eight teachers have been allocated. She said the school will enrol only Grade 8 pupils who will not be more than 150 in number, for the period of five years.

“We want to reduce the problem of overloaded classes in Carl Malcomess and Shayamoya High and to promote effective teaching and learning. The new school will only accept Grade 9 pupils in special cases,” said Zakuza-Njakazi.

Kokstad has two paying schools: Mount Currie and Kokstad College, and the numbers of pupils are manageable in those schools according to Njakazi. It is assumed that overcrowding in schools is caused by unemployed parents who prefer no-fee-schools than paying schools.

During last month’s back to school campaign, Carl Malcomess School principal Bheki Ndlovu said overcrowding is a challenge at the school and it is not easy for teachers to maintain discipline in cramped classrooms.

“Overcrowding in schools is going to be a thing of the past in Kokstad schools. The new school is going to address the challenge of drug use in schools which is caused by overcrowding,” added Zakuza-Njakazi.
