THE Greater Kokstad Municipality bought a new R3 million compactor truck, which will collect waste in Kokstad town and townships.

The keys were handed over by mayor Bheki Mtolo to waste management teams on Tuesday.

Illegal dumping of waste has been a concern to business and the communities of Kokstad, and Mtolo warned that people will be punished if they dump illegally.

He said the municipality is in talks with Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs to get another truck.

“The municipality has two trucks now, but we need a third truck to keep our town clean. Staff from waste management will be on duty throughout the festive season making sure that waste is collected,” said Mtolo.

Every day waste will be collected in Kokstad and there are municipal staff who will monitor illegal dumping.

Sinothando Mtshengu, the acting executive manager of community and social services in GKM said people will be educated about keeping the environment clean.
