THIS month is one of the most prestigious months in both the local and international calendar.

It is during this month that the stakeholders and communities in general showcasing deeds of goodwill. These deeds are in line with the extraordinary deeds, personality and lifestyle a late stalwart showcased while he was among us.

Dr. Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela has been defined in many words by different scholars, they all vocally arrive at the point whereby they do not to have a word better to define him than “messiah”.

Today, after numerous strides by the municipality, newly built houses and some of the renovated houses will be handed over to their beneficiaries in Ibisi.

It is now a factual reality that our communities are now better informed about HIV & AIDS and TB. What we are yet to significantly improve on is a responsible lifestyle our communities have to live by on daily basis.

As part of taking this to another level, Umzimkhulu Municipality has partnered with the Department of Health, Lifeline, Red Cross and other relevant stakeholders to conduct an awareness campaign at Umzimkhulu Transport Ranks. Voluntary blood testing will also be encouraged to those who will be willing to do so. As stakeholders, we appreciate the commitment shown by Santaco, a critical stakeholder operating in that sector.

As part of the council commitment towards creating and enabling an environment for the senior citizens (elderly) to live a healthy lifestyle, Umzimkhulu Municipality will be mobilising these elders into participating in different sporting codes.

Just like in the Mayoral Cup approach, they will be competing and selected per municipal zone, the finals will be held on July 30, 2018 in Umzimkhulu (New City Township). We pride ourselves about these participants as we have quite a few from Umzimkhulu who are national and provincial champions.

Government and its stakeholders has a series of programmes that seek to empower and capacitate males to be men of substance. Even though quite a lot of negative conduct by some men has regretfully dominated the public domain, there are men out there in our society who deserve to be recognised for their positive influence in our societies. These men are worth being celebrated while they are still alive.

The municipality has since formed and launched a Men’s Forum whereby men discuss and engage on issues that affect them and their roles in the societies.

Men in general are not immune to social ills, with cancer being one of the most threatening diseases. In the upcoming Men’s Day Celebration event, to held at Ntsikeni Village of zone 1, men will also be made aware of numerous social ills and recommendations will be compiled as men will also get an opportunity to fruitfully contribute through engagement.

Until we meet again.
