IN a dramatic development during a Matatiele Local Municipality council meeting, opposition party, African Independent Congress (AIC) members, walked out during the swearing in of Ward 12 councillor Jimmy Shabalala last Friday.

AIC candidate, Katleho Molefi, contested the by-elections in Ward 12 last month crying foul over the results that saw Shabalala winning as the ANC candidate.

During the council meeting AIC spokesperson Cllr Aubrey Mhlongo said they, as the AIC, would not be part of the swearing in of Shabalala because it was not part of the agenda.

Four AIC councillors - Nozuko Njobe, Aubrey Mhlongo, Zimbini Mgolombane and Exco member Thompson Maqhashalala - walked out during the swearing in of Shabalala.

“The agenda that was sent to all councillors did not have item 4.1, the swearing in of Mr Shabalala, on therefore we will not be part of it because it was not part of the agenda.

“Secondly, as the AIC, we submitted a formal objection to the electoral court with regards to the Ward 12 by-elections that made Shabalala councillor so we cannot be part of a process we are opposing,” he said.

Matatiele Local Municipality Mayor Momelezi Mbedla said Shabalala is part of council.

“There is no need to delay council with a non-issue, Cllr Shabalala is a part of this council, he was proclaimed the councillor of Ward 12 by the IEC,” he said.
