PEER educators from Umzimkhulu are promoting a healthy lifestyle in Umzimkhulu villages after receiving extensive training on how to treat and manage chronic diseases, including HIV/Aids.

The training was held in Rietvlei Gateway Clinic last Friday.

They were told to help young people aged between 12 and 24 and educate them about not exposing themselves HIV and other diseases.

An Umzimkhulu NGO is also assisting young people to live a healthy life-style and is educating those infected to stick to their medication regimen.

Zolani Mhlongo from Umzim- khulu said people must get tested for HIV.

“The country has a high teenage pregnancy rate and young people must abstain from sex, and use condoms [when they do],” said Ziphelele Mjoli a Rietvlei Gateway Clinic nurse.

Peer education is the teaching or sharing of health information, values and behaviour in educating others who may share similar social backgrounds or life experiences.
