THE South African National Blood Services (SANBS) said more blood will be needed this Easter weekend as there’s often a rise in car accidents during this busy season.

On Monday afternoon, SANBS nurses assisted a number of blood donors who donated blood at St Patrick’s Church in Kokstad.

Blood donor, Lerato May said it is the fifth time donating blood and he encouraged people to support the campaign to save lives.

Another blood donor, Juliet Bischof said there are many people that need blood.

“I have donated blood for 11 times,” said Bischof.

“I always tell my children and pupils to donate blood because there are many people that require it to survive. I have donated blood for 203 times,” said Lettie Pelser, another blood donor.

On Tuesday, people from Matatiele also donated blood.

According to Sister Leanne Pillay from SANBS, one person’s blood can save three lives of people. She said mothers who are in labour, sick people and people who get involved in car accidents require blood the most.

“There is no one who can live without blood. It takes only 20-30 minutes to donate blood and people must support the campaign,” said Pillay.

She said people who are above 16 years and in good health can donate blood.

“By end of the year we will give rewards to people who have donated blood four times this year as this is part of motivating people,” added Pillay.
