Poets educate Umzimkhulu youth

2018-06-29 06:00

POETS and authors that attended the Umzimkhulu Poetry Show at Umzimkhulu Gateway last Saturday encouraged young people to refrain from using drugs and alcohol and to engage in poetry writing as an alternative.

The show was hosted in celebration of Youth Day and many young people attended.

A workshop on poetry writing was conducted.

Kwazi Ndlangisa, one of the organisers and managing director of Pot of Art, said many young people needed to be rescued from drugs and be counselled into changing their lives for the better. “Many young people who attended demonstrated their gifts by writing poems. The youth of 1976 fought for liberation movement and the youth of 2018 need to fight for better a future - education, employment and skills,” said Ndlangisa.

Department of Arts and Culture and Umzimkhulu Municipality officials supported the event and poets such as Lady Afrika, Khumbulani Sithole, Ntokozo Zulu and Luleka Mhlanzi performed.

The Umzimkhulu Poetry Movement, that was formed last year, has been teaching the Umzimkhulu youth about the dangers of getting involved in crime.
