THE SAPS recently conducted a four-day operation, from Friday until Monday morning, in Kokstad town and townships. Members of the Crime Prevention Unit and Dog Unit formed part of the operation.

They searched for dangerous weapons, dagga and drugs at taxi ranks, and closed illegal taverns in the townships.

SAPS spokesperson Captain Dumisani Ncongo said the operation will be conducted every weekend because most crimes occur on weekends.

“On [last] Friday, police discovered dangerous weapons, whoonga, mandrax and alcohol at a taxi rank and arrested a number of people.

“When they moved to Horseshoe Township, 13 people, including a 56-year-old man ,were arrested for public drinking,” said Ncongo.

A 20-year-old man and a 60-year-old woman from Horseshoe were arrested for selling liquor illegally.

Another 45-year-old man from Bhongweni was arrested for selling liquor illegally and was also in the possession of dagga.

Ncongo said the police will not rest until criminal activities have stopped in Kokstad. He said Kokstad needs to be a safe place rather than a no-go area because of crime. “The people who were arrested during the operation paid admission of guilt fines, and others will be appearing in Kokstad Magistrate’s Court soon.”
