POLICE in KwaZulu-Natal conducted a number of operations to limit illegal firearms in the hands of criminals during the month of April.

Operations commenced from April 1 to the early hours on Monday, April 30.
They were held in 17 clusters like Bulwer, Amangwe, Esikhaleni, KwaDukuza, Estcourt and Greytown.

SAPS spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Thulani Zwane said that 122 pistols, three high-calibre riffles, four shotguns and three home-made firearms were seized during the operation.

“149 men were arrested during the operations and will appear in various magistrate courts. Three firearms will be subjected to ballistic testing to determine whether they were used in the commission of anti-crime in the country to help in solving pending cases,” said Zwane. 629 rounds of ammunition were also seized.

“These operations were aimed at eradicating the proliferation of illegal firearms and to make the province a safer place for people. We urge communities to report all those in possession of unlicensed firearms within their neighbourhoods to the police,” said the
KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa. Langa said that the removal of illegal firearms will prevent the unnecessary loss of lives as well as other serious and violent crimes such as taxi related attacks, stock theft and faction fights.
