Port Shepstone CANSA centre closes its doors

2017-08-04 06:00

KZN CANSA divisional manager Lisa Strydom has confirmed that the CANSA South Coast Care Centre in Port Shepstone closed its doors at the end of June. She said the decision came after much deliberation and planning.

She said all the necessary services required by the local community are continuing seamlessly as they are co-ordinated by staff in the CANSA Durban Care Centre.

The four main categories that will be absorbed and operated by the team in Durban will include cancer screening, stoma (ostomy) products, support groups and referring relevant cancer patients to the CANSA Mkhuhla Care Home.

“While change can often be unsettling, we’d like to assure patients who have been regular users of the Port Shepstone Centre that very little will change in terms of CANSA’s care and service offering,” said Strydom.

When it comes to cancer screening, she said CANSA has formed a new partnership with the KZN Department of Health that will enable monthly cancer screening to take place from the CANSA mobile health clinic that mainly operates in under-serviced areas.

“In addition, the Department of Health community caregivers will be up-skilled with improved cancer knowledge and specific cancer care.

“Should the community be interested, a monthly screening clinic will operate from various locations in Port Shepstone,” she said.

She added that patients who usually order monthly stoma (ostomy) products from CANSA telephonically can continue to do so and an agreed convenient delivery and collection point can be organised.

With regards to new patients in the area requiring CANSA’s assistance, contact can be made with the CANSA Durban Care Centre to order or enquire about new stoma products.

The support group based at Kingsway Hospital in Amanzimtoti will continue to function with the assistance of committed Cansa volunteers, and if the need for further support groups in other areas is required, CANSA has confirmed that it is willing to do so.
