NOW the real deal starts on the Proteas’ tour of India — the Test series.

While it’s a huge confidence boost to have won the T20 and ODI series, its Test cricket that counts and gets recorded in the glorious history of the game. For the Proteas, now is the time.

Thursday was the first day of the first Test in Mohali, the first of four Tests. At the end of the series, if the Proteas manage to pull off a win, it will be one of the most stupendous efforts in the annals of South African cricket, talk of and read about for decades.

It’s not beyond the Proteas and they will feel they have as strong a chance as any to take the spoils. They have a nine-year unbeaten record away from home and they won’t give that up easily.

Protea Test captain Hashim Amla knows that a Test series win will crown a magnificent achievement and open a new chapter in the game’s history as the Proteas focus on achieving what no other team have ever managed to accomplish — beating India in a series on their soil in all three formats of the game.

“Being the number one ranked Test team has placed the pressure of winning on us in the past three years and we have done well and produced the desired results,” said Amla.

“There are many players who have not won a series in India before but they take heart that we have played good cricket here in the past. Of course, we would want a series win and the way the tour has gone for us to date and the cricket the Test squad play, I cannot see why we shouldn’t come out on top.”

Amla is one of the players who has not won a Test in India.
