MARRY Balekwa (76) said her aim is to win many medals when the Ugu District Municipality hosts their district selections, on August 2, in preparation for the Golden Games.

Balekwa was part of a group of 200 elderly women and men who participated in a number of sporting activities at the Harding Sport Field on Tuesday.

The games were held by Umuziwabantu Municipality as part of selecting 150 people who will participate at the Ugu District Games on August 2.

Mbalekwa has participated in the Golden Games since 2011 and has won 15 gold and silver medals.

“Last year, I won a silver medal after running 400 metres at national champs and this year I want to win a gold medal. At home, I walk more than 20 km to stay fit,” said Balekwa.

She thanked government for introducing the Golden Games, which motivates elderly people to stay healthy.

Another runner, Mzoxolo Ntshokolo (78), said he ran 800 m at the games last year and won a silver medal, saying: “I have more than 15 medals at home for running.”

Umuziwabantu Municipality special programmes manager Magic Mohlaoli said the games are for people who have reached over 60 years old.

He said each year they host the games to promote fitness and a healthy lifestyle in elderly people.

“The games have received lot of support from Department of Sport and Recreation and municipalities. Elderly people are encouraged to participate in sporting activities,” said Mohlaoli.
