THE community of Shayamoya was shocked as they watched Athokozile Mtshongwana’s body being retrieved by police divers from a dam in the area last Thursday. The police confirmed that an inquest docket has been opened.

It is alleged that the Nomzamo Primary Grade 4 pupil was swimming with his 12-year-old cousin when he drowned.

“I was at work when I received a phone call that Athokozile had drowned at the dam and I rushed to the scene and found police divers searching for his body,” said Zwelakhe Mkhatshu, who was staying with Athokozile.

He said it took almost three hours for the body to be found.

When Fever arrived at the scene, community members and Athokozile’s friends were helping police to search for the body in the deep dam. The body was retrieved at 6 pm and taken to a government mortuary for a post mortem.

Community members warned young people not to play in dams or rivers.
