AT a tourism campaign at Shayamoya Secondary on Tuesday, businesswoman Siphokazi Thiam encouraged matriculants to consider the tourism sector after matric.

The campaign was organised by the school’s tourism teacher, Loyiso Bavuma, who told pupils about tourism opportunities.

Bavuma said most pupils get good results in tourism, but lack the knowledge of how to promote it in Kokstad.

“Kokstad is rich in tourism and pupils can create many job opportunities by promoting tourism or open B&B’s.

The aim of the campaign is to open the minds of matrics and show them there are many opportunities in tourism.”

Thiam owns B&Bs in Kokstad and has won several awards due to promoting tourism. She told pupils to use the internet and search career opportunities in tourism.

“My love of tourism started in Grade 8. I sold sweets at school, opened a small shop in Kokstad town, converted my two roomed house into a B&B and today they are well known.

“I am proud to be a businesswoman who promotes tourism in the small town of Kokstad. People must learn to start things small and work hard for success,” said Thiam.

She said her success is driven by passion, perseverance and love of tourism.

She warns young girls not to fall love with older men and not turn to prostitution due to a lack of money, instead they must seek opportunities from tourism and work hard.

Matriculant Lungile Radebe said he learnt a lot and would like to study tourism after matric.
