THE Department of Transport partnered with Matatiele Local Municipality to ensure pupils are safe when they travel on foot or use transport to school and back.

In Cedarville a school safety campaign was launched by government to celebrate Transport Month.

Overloading and speeding of vehicles that transport pupils was condemned and government asked the community and stakeholders for assistance to ensure pupils’ safety.

Sive Special School in Cedarville was identified as the most dangerous for pupils who have to cross the R56 and “dodge” speeding vehicles.

Xolisa Jakuja from the Department of Transport said the department is working with stakeholders to protect pupils when going to school.

“Parents must help government expose drivers who fail to abide by the rules of the road, like driving under the influence of alcohol, using un-roadworthy vehicles and driving at high speed,” said Jakuja.

To celebrate Transport Month, a march was held through the streets of Cedarville by the Department of Transport officials, Matatiele Local Municipality officials, SAPS and members of local taxi associations with pupils carrying placards calling for safety.
