ANGRY pupils at Carl Malcomess High in Kokstad went on the rampage last Friday and burnt three prefabricated classrooms.

They also threatened to burn the entire school if the government did not build proper classrooms for them.

“We need new classrooms. We are cold inside these prefabs and if we are silent no one is going to hear us. Government must build new classrooms,” shouted one angry pupil.

Parents and SGB members, who live next to the school in Bongweni township, told pupils to stop burning classrooms.

SGB member Thandeka Phoswa condemned the act.

“Why do pupils only complain about the cold after the June holidays? They must not burn classes, even if they want new ones. Parents and SGB are here to talk to them if they want to voice their dissatisfaction or concerns.”

Phoswa said three years ago there was a misunderstanding between pupils of Carl Malcomess and other schools when parents had to intervene and talk to pupils.

“We prayed for calm inside school premises. Today we will, as SGB members, tell pupils not to burn classes.”

The women, who cook for the pupils, say their anger and misbehaviour comes from the use of drugs at school.

“Pupils disrespect their principal and teachers. Recently a dustbin was thrown at the principal. I stopped them and told them to respect their principal,” said Nokwanda Dzanibe, one of the cooks.

She also said cooks have had food thrown at them by pupils.

Classes were called off on Friday and pupils were told to leave the school premises. Police are patrolling in and around the school.
