Rabies scare in Kokstad, get dogs vaccinated

2015-11-27 06:00

GREATER effort needs to be put into vaccinating dogs against rabies in order to save lives, said SPCA inspector Chesta Mgumane. The call came after a dog tested positive last week.

Once symptoms develop it is nearly always fatal, although there is a brief window after a bite during which a vaccine can prevent the infection becoming deadly.

The SPCA said mass vaccination could “make rabies history”.

The SPCA argued that protecting dogs was the most cost-effective way of protecting people.

Mgumane said the affected dog became very aggressive, so it was taken to the vet and the results came back positive.

Mgumane urged people to take their dogs to the SPCA to be vaccinated and told them to alert the SPCA should their dogs become very aggressive.

Kokstad Chamber of Commerce PRO Margi Fleming also urged people to be aware of their dogs because a case of rabies has reared its head in Kokstad.

“The dog has tested positive for rabies - please ensure that your animals are vaccinated. Signs of rabies in domestic animals would be strange or aggressive behaviour, foaming at the mouth, wild animals would maybe act friendly.

“If you have been bitten or scratched by a stray animal you need to contact your doctor as a matter of urgency. The state vet has been made aware of this and has taken immediate action in vaccinating all the animals in the area. A rabies clinic will be held soon.”
