IN celebration of its 10th birthday, Alfred Nzo Community Radio Station hosted a prayer session in Matatiele Town Hall last Saturday at which gospel artists performed.

From September the station has hosted a number of activities to celebrate the occasion.

Since the station was established in Mount Ayliff in 2007, it has identified young people talented in broadcasting and journalism, some of whom have moved to big radio stations and government departments.

The station was named after the late liberation struggle icon, Alfred Nzo, who grew up in Mount Fletcher and Thaba-Chicha village.

In Alfred Nzo District, the station is the only community radio that gives information, educates and entertains in Xhosa, Sotho and English.

“The station’s listenership grows every day because of dedicated staff that understand the quantity of producing quality programmes for the interest of the public.

“We have empowered many students in journalism from various tertiary institutions by giving them work experience,” said station manager, Kebitsamang Moshoeshoe.

The station’s frequency is 98.3fm and 93.8fm.

Moshoeshoe said it is not easy for the station to get funding or advertising because it is surrounded by rural communities, unlike other radio stations in cities where companies and businesses advertise and contribute funds.

She thanked government and municipalities that advertise with them.

On November 24 at celebrations in Mzamba radio presenters will be awarded for their work.
