‘Rather lose work than life’ – ANC councillor

2018-06-22 06:01

AN African National Congress (ANC) PR councillor, who asked not to be named for security reasons, has told the Feverthat his life is in danger and he has been living in fear for the past months.

He said two men known to him warned him not to walk in unsafe places because he can be the next person to be killed in the Harry Gwala Region.

“I will be resigning as PR councillor and remain an ordinary ANC member. I don’t want to be the next person to be killed,” said the councillor.

When he spoken to a Feverreporter on Tuesday, he said he would be consulting with the ANC and ANCYL before he resigns because he was deployed to work as councillor in the Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma Municipality.

In 2011, he worked as ward councillor in the former KwaSani Municipality in the Harry Gwala Region and, after the 2016 Local Government Elections, he was elected as PR councillor in the Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma Municipality.

“The men did not notify me on why I am being targeted. Instead, they told me to make sure that I am safe. I am praying that there must be peace within members of the ruling party in the region,” he added.

The Harry Gwala Region has lost several members who were reportedly being attacked by unknown people. It is believed that they were targeted because of political factions.

Some of the political leaders who were brutally attacked last year include former ANC Harry Gwala Region deputy chairperson Councillor Khaya Thobela and former ANCYL secretary general, councillor Sindiso Magaqa, .

Last week, the ANC elected a Harry Gwala Regional Task Team, led by co-ordinator Sindi Msomi and 11 other members. Speaking to the Fever, Msomi said the new members of the task team will be working hard to unite the party and to end political killings within the region.

She asked members of the party who think that they are unsafe not to move about in dangerous places because the district has observed lots of killings.

“The term of the ANC Harry Gwala Regional structure expired and there were lot of problems which resulted in disunity. We want to conduct branch general meetings and prepare for regional conference,” said Msomi.

She called on members of the ANC to work as a team to resolve problems. “Politicians and civilians have been killed in this region and this has made many people fear for their lives,” she added.

She called on members of the party to confront one another, or request a mediator, in order to convey peace in the region.

“We hope that this task team will carry out its task with diligence and credibility. The time for unity, renewal, and creation of jobs has arrived.

“Let us all put our swords aside and prioritise the people’s parliament for an overwhelming majority victory in the 2019 General Elections,” said Harry Gwala ANCYL regional secretary Qiniso Ntozakhe.

Members of the task team include Sindi Msomi (co-ordinator), Syanda Mavuma, Nobuhle Nkabane, Zolani Mhlongo, Monde Nondabula, Sindi Nkala, Zamo Nxumalo, Zwakele Mngonyama, Thembi Zikode, Nontlantla Mathanda and Qiniso Ntozakhe.
