Removal of arrested councillor called for

POLITICAL parties are calling for the removal of Greater Kokstad Municipality Ward 4 councillor, Mfundiso Figlan, who was released on R1 000 bail on November 15 by Kokstad Magistrate’s Court for allegedly having a fraudulent matric certificate.

The South African Communist Party Ward 4 secretary, Sihle Mbabala said
Figlan must be removed from the
municipality because he is not a good
example to the young people of Kokstad.

“Many young people study hard to get their matric certificate and when they see that some people are progressing on fraudulent matric documents they will start doing the same.

“We want the municipality to remove the councillor,” said Mbabala.

Figlan became a Ward 4 councillor
after last year’s local government elections.

He was caught by SAPS when he tried to get a matric certificate certified.

He and some councillors furthered their studies at Wits University, with the help from the municipality, but the DA wants him removed from the university.

Bradwyn Marnce, DA deputy chairperson in Harry Gwala blamed the municipality and Wits University for failing to identify the alleged fraudulent certificate.

“We want the investigation to find out why and how he had the certificate, and who helped him get it.

“The DA wants him be suspended as councillor pending the outcome of the court case,” said Marnce.
