MORE than 4 000 employees of Shoprite Group’s fresh food department across the country, including Kokstad will be up-skilled as a result of the retailer‘straining programme.

At the centre of the programme, there is an assistant chef programme which will equip staff with NQF Level 2 qualification. “The training will help the staff to better their understanding of the industry and outline a clear career path”, said Kelly Atherton from the store.

The first group of 157 female staff have recently commenced the training at the International Hotel School in Gauteng.

“Everyone is rethinking their recipes and techniques, while also learning new ones. We are certain that up-skilling our team will drive our business and the economy”, said Moga Pillay, spokesperson for the Group’s training programmes.

“As South Africa’s largest private sector employer, this is about more than just delivering better products and services to our customers. We want to offer our employees opportunities to grow their careers and continue climbing the culinary ladder within and outside our business”, said Pillay.

Mathedimosa, a deli controller at Checkers Hyper Montana in Pretoria, is one of the participants and she believes this course is changing the direction of her career and will open doors for many people.

“I am learning valuable skills during this training and I am excited to take it back to store and use it to grow. I can’t wait to see customer’s reaction to my homemade mayonnaise”, said Mathedimosa.
