A NUMBER of runners participated in a sport against crime event, held in Maluti, last Sunday.

Participants chose to either run a 10 km race, from Matatiele town, or a 5 km race, from Khoapha village, with the finishing point for all races being Maluti College.

Lesotho runner Tebello Ramakongoana finished the 10 km race first at 31 minutes 14 seconds. The 400 m hill between Khoapa and Ramohlakoana village was not easy for many runners to climb, but Ramakongoana managed to complete it to secure the first place prize. He received a R 2 000 reward for coming first.

Teboho Nosi, also from Lesotho, finished in second place at a time of 32 minutes and 5 seconds, securing a prize of R 1 000. Durban runner Anele Dlamini placed third, with a time of 32 minutes and 29 seconds, and was awarded a R 500 prize.

“We were supported by the Matatiele Local Municipality traffic cops and SAPS. Athletics clubs from Lesotho, Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal also played a big role in the event,” said Teboho Mohoto, chairperson of the Ced-Matat Athletics Club that organised the event.

He urged young people to play sport to build social cohesion, fitness and to help fight crime.
