SOME roads in Umzimkhulu received a facelift from the municipality and rural communities have welcomed the developments. This after they had been complaining about the condition of the road for years.

Rural roads from Emaus village were in a bad state and needed maintenance.

To maintain rural roads, the municipality bought two graders, low-bed trucks, tipper trucks, water tankers and hydraulic excavator costing R14 million.

“The municipality has many rural villages compared to other municipalities under Harry Gwala District and there is a huge backlog in road maintenance.

“We purchased the trucks so the municipality doesn’t have to hire trucks for road maintenance,” said Umzimkhulu Local Municipality mayor Mphuthumi Mpabanga.

He said the Department of Transport also assisted with the maintenance of some access roads as communities have complained.

“By improving rural roads, we want to ensure that ambulances, police and emergency vehicles don’t struggle to reach rural areas. Many job opportunities have been created during the construction and maintenance of roads,” said Mpabanga.

Mluleki Msingaphantsi from Ward 5 thanked the municipality for responding to their complaints about the poor road conditions.
