Rural women defeat poverty

2018-05-25 06:00

AS part of fighting poverty, five rural women Thandi Njengela, Vivian Dlamini, Nomthandazo Bango, Phumzile Yona and Favorite Ndabani have formed a co-operative called Sizonqoba Textile which created job opportunities in Umzimkhulu.

The women formed the co-operative in 2011 after they personally experienced poverty in their homes. They said, instead of folding arms and waiting for Government support, they decided to make clothes and school uniforms and sold them to local schools.

“We received lots of training on how to make quality clothes through the assistance of Harry Gwala District Municipality,” said Thandi Njengela who is the chairperson for the co-operative.

Njengela said that members of this co-operative are single mothers and some of their husbands are unemployed and use their earnings to feed their families and send their children to school. Njengela said that poverty is now a thing of the past in their families.

“We have trained many young people and women who assist us during busy days. The co-operative has grown tremendously,” Njengela said. The co-operative makes garments for 20 local churches and school uniforms for 15 schools in Umzimkhulu.

Umzimkhulu municipal mayor Mphuthumi Mpabanga commended the work done by the rural women.

“The women have supplied the municipality with tracksuits at sport tournaments and I am proud of their work. I want to encourage local communities including youth to form businesses to grow local economy,” said Mpabanga.
