DEPLOYMENT of more police officers to combat crime in Umzimkhulu is welcomed, but the South African Communist Party (SACP) is not happy after their leader was arrested with a 9mm Norinco pistol and eight rounds last Saturday.

Ntlahla Zungu, SACP district secretary of the Greater Umzimkhulu region, was in a vehicle when he was arrested.

He was taken by police to the Ibisi Police Station where he was detained and charged for being in possession of an alleged unlicenced firearm and ammunition.

On Monday he did not appear in Umzimkhulu Magistrate’s Court as he was supposed to, instead he was released after the charges against him were withdrawn, due to the fact that his wife brought the licence to the police station as evidence.

SACP members lambasted police for arresting him without initially having evidence, and blamed it on political interference.

Zoliswa Nyide, SACP deputy secretary in Greater Umzimkhulu region said police failed to do their job properly.

“The SACP welcomes the deployment of police to Umzimkhulu, but police must do their job carefully and not be influenced by political leaders from Harry Gwala region and KwaZulu-Natal, who want to score political points,” said Nyide.
