THE South African Communist Party (SACP) in Harry Gwala District held its first district executive committee meeting in Kokstad last Sunday where a number of resolutions were taken.

District secretary Ntlahla Zungu said the meeting was about raising funds, deploying members to local villages and giving the Harry Gwala District SACP a new name. “The Greater Kokstad region, Greater Umzimkhulu region and Ixopo region merged last month and formed one district that we want to give a new name,” said Zungu.

Zungu said members of the party proposed the name of former SACP leader Chris Hani and Judy Mulqueeny, the former SACP member who played a significant role in the party. He said people are welcome to put forward their suggestions and a final decision will be made after a district council meeting on March 3.

He also welcomed the State of the Nation Address (Sona) presented by President Cyril Ramaphosa last Thursday evening.

“I hope that there is going to be some change in the country after President Ramaphosa delivered the Sona. The SACP wants more action for the benefit of poor people,” said Zungu.

He said the party has not finalised the matter of contesting general elections independently next year. The party promised to conduct meetings in all areas of Harry Gwala to listen to people’s complaints.
