2016-06-24 06:00

RAMSGATE High Court sentenced a police murderer Ayanda Hlupheko (30), to three life sentences for armed robbery with aggravated circumstances, three counts of murder and attempted murder last Friday. He also received an additional 10 years for attempted murder.

In April 2015 at around 9.30pm three Harding police officers - Constable Mpendulo Jaca, Constable Zamukwanda Majoka and Sergeant Sandile Mbhele - responded to an alarm that went off at a wholesaler in Harding CBD.

Unbeknown to the officers, there was an armed robbery in progress and when they drove to the wholesaler, the suspects opened fire on the police vehicle with AK-47 rifles.
Hawks spokesperson Captain Simphiwe Mhlongo said the vehicle caught alight as a result of the automatic gunfire unleashed by Hlupeko and his accomplices.
Bystanders managed to rescue the female police officer, Mbhele, from the vehicle while Jaca and Majoka, were stuck inside the burning vehicle and died,” said Captain Simphiwe Mhlongo.
