SASSA beneficiary Nomvulo Nyamela (83) says she was shocked when she received only R270 as her old-age grant on February 2 instead of R1 620. Nyamela, who rents a house in Shayamoya, said in January she received R15 and R50 in December.

Every month, she is suppose to get a R1 620 old-age grant, R920 foster-care grant and R380 child-support grant, according to a pay slip that she showed Fever. She said on the pay slip it shows that an unauthorised deduction of R2 087 was done and R850 was correctly deducted.

“I don’t know who keeps deducting the money from my Sassa card and I have complained to Sassa offices and do not get clear answers. Last week, I went to the Sassa offices with my pay slip and I was told that the money was deducted by companies that I don’t know,” said Nyamela.

She is living with two grandchildren and said sometimes they go to bed without having eaten anything.

“Neighbours and some relatives donated groceries to me to eat nice food on Christmas day. I have gone three months without paying rent and I’m scared that the house owner will kick me out,” said Nyamela.

In December, another Sassa beneficiary whose money was wrongly deducted from their Sassa card was paid back the money after the story was published in the Fever.

Sassa had not responded to queries at a time of going to press.
