A TOURNAMENT which aims to develop sport in schools was launched by the Ubuhlebezwe Municipality in Ixopo last Friday. It was established by eight schools in Ixopo and will be played on April 21 and May 5.

In 2011, the municipality started supporting it as a way of uniting schools and developing sport. A total of 50 schools will participate this year and they will play for various prizes.

Ubuhlebezwe Municipal deputy mayor Elizabeth Ngobo said the municipality supports the tournament in order to shape the future of young people and develop schools.

“We want to change the minds of pupils who often use drugs and alcohol in schools and lose respect,” said Ngobo.

Schools that were found guilty of misconduct in the past have been removed from the tournament while others were given warnings.

“Last year we received complaints about pupils who drank alcohol and caused disruptions in Ixopo after the tournament. We don’t want that to happen this year

“Police will be patrolling on the day to make sure that everyone is safe,” said Mlungisi Mkhize, director of corporate services at Ubuhlebezwe.
