THE family of Yanga Tinyane (28) from Kokstad is concerned after he was shot and killed allegedly by police in Railway Street on May 20.

His father Mnyamezeli said his son was transferred to a Pietermaritzburg hospital and died three days later.
He was buried on June 3 after community members donated groceries and money for the funeral.

“I am upset because police didn’t inform me about death of my son and I am concerned about the circumstances.
“Detectives told me my son was shot after he wouldn’t allow police to arrest him for driving a stolen car,” said Mnyamezeli.

He said his son was driving his friend’s car.

Last Friday Mnyamezeli spoke to the station commander about his son’s death and was told that a case of murder is being investigated under Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID).

“I want police to give me reasons why they killed my innocent son.
“I have sleepless nights thinking about my son’s murder.”
Police spokesperson Captain Dumisani Ncongo confirmed that a case of murder has been opened against a police officer and the docket is under IPID.
