LOCAL business giants are planning to open a state of the art shopping centre in Ixopo.

The new landmark Sisonke shopping centre is set to be developed along the R56 towards Richmond from Kokstad.

The current cost of development of the mall is estimated at approximately R250 million which will allow for world-class finishes throughout the mall while the healthcare centre part of it would cost approximately R350 million according to planners.

Siyabonga Cyril Malanda, Mondli Lukhozi and Sizwe Mbanjwa are planning to build a shopping centre and they already conducted environmental assessment and passed.

Malanda, who owns a number of petrol stations in South Coast, Cape Town and Umzimkhulu including Steers franchises said the proposed centre will be a 20000m2, state-of-the art shopping mall.

He said national and local retailers have already shown interest in the new development. Malanda said the centre is planning to have restaurants and fast food outlets, banks, a petrol station, a car showroom, an office block, a hotel, as well as a mix of national retailers and a Harry Gwala private healthcare hospital.

“We have already discussed with Ubuhlebezwe Municipality and Harry Gwala District Municipality for infrastructure development in the mall” said Malanda.

He said the construction of the mall is expected to be started soon.

“We already finalised studies on engineering services, environmental studies, traffic impact, geological studies so that work can begin” said” Malanda.

Ubuhlebezwe Municipality Mayor Zamo Nxumalo said he believed that the proposed mall would contribute to the economic growth of the area and its people.

“It will provide numerous much needed job opportunities for local people and will give them more variety to shop from locally, rather than having to travel long distance to access that variety as they are forced to currently.”

Malanda said the centre will also help ease traffic congestion in town.

‘We believe the shopping mall will develop communities of Ixopo in line with government priorities to develop people. The architect told us that about 500 people are expected to be employed during construction alone and when it completed about 800 people are expected to get job opportunities,” said Malanda.
