Sundowns coach hosts football tourney

MAMELODI Sundowns assistant coach Manqoba Mngqithi will be hosting his annual football tournament at his home town Umzimkhulu this weekend.

The tournament, Mngqithi said, is aimed at developing young football talents in the rural district of Harry Gwala.

Mngqithi has managed a number of clubs in the Premier Soccer League and he will be attending the tournament.

Mamisa Ngcobo, one of the organisers said Harry Gwala football clubs who affiliated with the South African Football Association (SAFA) have already played elimination games at Local Football Associations (LFA).

He said this weekend 32 teams will be playing knockout at four separate sport fields.

“There will be four groups of teams who will be competing this weekend. Eight teams will be selected to go for quarter-finals on June 16,” said Ngcobo.

A winner will be announced on June 16 and rewarded R15 000 prize. The prize winner of R10 000 will be given to a team that will come second at the tournament. The third prize will be R7 000, and the fourth prize R5 000. “The losers quarter-finals team will be given a prize of R3 000 and a top goal scorer will also awarded R1 000,” said Ngcobo.

He said Mngqithi will be accompanied by people who will be scouting for talented players in the district.
