CRIMINALS appear to be targeting a farm school, Palmiet Primary in Gogela outside Kokstad - because many burglary cases have been opened by the school, but the perpetrators have never been found and teachers are now afraid.

On Friday, teachers reported another burglary after a Grade R classroom door was broken open and a computer and other items stolen.

The computer was used for Grade R to Grade 3 pupils.

Grade R teacher, Thulisiwe Mdutyulwa said she was shocked when she saw the broken door on Friday morning. “The windows were not damaged, only the door,” said Mdutyulwa. The school is fully fenced, but the gate was damaged a long time ago and has never been repaired. There is no security at the school. Since 2014, the school has opened five cases of burglary after food and computers were stolen.

Principal Nozuko Matsilelo said teachers don’t feel safe anymore because the school is surrounded by trees and bush where criminals can hide and it is seven kilometres away from the nearest village.

“I am asking government to provide a security guard during the day and night,” said Matsilelo.

Teachers hire vans to transport pupils from home to school and back because it is not safe for them to travel on foot.

SAPS spokesman Captain Dumisani Ncongo said no arrests have been made.
