Tension mounts as ANCYL leadership battle ensues

TENSION has surfaced between members of the African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) in the Harry Gwala region.

This was after members of the ANCYL in the region have shown differing views about who must lead the organisation, this as they prepare for the national congress, which runs from September 6 to September 11.

On June 8, Harry Gwala Youth League secretary Qiniso Ntozakhe told the Feverthat members of the league would be supporting the KwaZulu-Natal Youth League provincial secretary Thanduxolo Sabela for the leadership position at the congress.

However, now former Harry Gwala District youth league spokesperson Ntando Maduna spoke out on social media about supporting youth league treasurer-general Reggie Nkabinde for the presidency.

Following Maduna’s social media posts about his support for Nkabinde, a special Regional Executive Committee (REC) meeting was convened at ANC offices in Ixopo, on Monday, and a decision was taken to remove him as regional spokesperson.

Ntozakhe confirmed that Maduna was removed from his position because the Youth League “no longer trusted him”.

“The REC felt that it could no longer trust this comrade (Maduna) to continue heading the communication sub-committee as he has publicly divorced REC decisions and misrepresented REC perspectives on social media,” said Ntozakhe in a statement on Monday.

Speaking to the Fever, Ntozakhe said Maduna was present, along with other league members, at the meeting when the decision to support Sabela was taken.

“He (Maduna) has contradicted our view. We have lost trust in him as he went to a public platform to announce his support for Nkabinde while we had agreed to support Sabela. He even approached some branches of the party in order to mobilise support for Nkabinde,” added Ntozakhe.

In response, Maduna confirmed that he had been removed from his position but said he would not be stopped from speaking out about what he believed.

“It’s okay, I can be removed from my position — I am not going to stop supporting Nkabinde for the leadership position because he qualifies and is passionate about the youths’ needs,” said Maduna.

He said some branches in the Dr Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma sub-region have showed full support for Nkabinde and he would mobilise them to support Nkabinde.

Other items discussed at the special REC meeting included the preparations for the 2019 general elections and the newly elected ANC regional task team, which was elected to build political stability in Harry Gwala.

The REC also welcomed the newly appointed structure of Congress of South African Student organisation (Cosas) in Harry Gwala, currently chaired by Ongezwa Maqashalala.
