POLICE minister Bheki Cele has praised detectives for uncovering millions of rands worth of drugs during an operation in Harding, calling it the biggest drug haul in history. Two people have been arrested and police expect to make more arrests soon.

Cele, flanked by national police commissioner General Khehla Sitole and other top brass, visited the Hawks’ offices in Port Shepstone to inspect the drugs.

The drug bust comes after a team, made up of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks), Crime Intelligence and Port Shepstone’s TRT and K9, uncovered a clandestine drug manufacturing laboratory on a local farm.

Two machines, worth an estimated half a million rand each, were also confiscated by police. Cele said the machines could produce 16 tablets in two seconds. While not yet confirmed, the drugs are believed to be Mandrax. Cele said the drugs were most likely being shipped to other parts of the country and could range in price (per pill) from R40 in Durban to R150 in Johannesburg. He said this was not the last of it as they were also planning to target another farm in Pietermaritzburg that was also believed to be producing drugs.

Cele said they knew the kingpin of the operation and would be moving to arrest him soon.

The value and quantity of the drugs had not yet been determined.
