GREETINGS to all.

2017 Premier Awards

We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the nominees and winners in the various categories of this event held in Durban ICC last week. The event proved that KwaZulu-Natal is a service delivery-driven province. As the municipality, we are honoured for being among the four nominees in two categories. The two bronze awards we won can be attributed to the community and the employees of this rural municipality. That moment will always be treasured.

Faceless and unscrupulous employers

It was shocking to realise there are people who continue to exploit our communities by taking advantage of their vulnerability.

Last week 300 people from throughout Umzimkhulu were “led” to the Umzimkhulu Library by faceless “employers” who made them pay R100 each for employment. They were promised the job of distributing medication in the villages. The timely intervention by municipal officials saved some of these people and exposed these faceless employers, but some people had already been exploited.

The Department of Education and the Department of Health distanced themselves from this so-called programme. As a municipality we are not aware of this “employment” and would like to distance ourselves especially because councillors were not contacted or consulted by these people.

Women’s Month

We welcome everyone to this Women’s Month under the theme “Women United in Moving South Africa” in this year of OR Tambo. As a municipality we are committed to create an enabling environment for women to ensure the future is bright.

Till we meet again.
