Ward 8 electrification

The electrification of more than 210 households in Ward 8 of Umzimkhulu is moving smoothly in Dresini, Mtshazafe, Ngunjini and Pholanyoni. We pride ourselves on playing such a vital role in changing the lives of ordinary citizens.

We would like to call upon all stakeholders to prepare themselves with programmes and projects that will uplift economical spin-offs when the electrification has been completed.

In the same breath, we would like to sincerely apologise to the communities of Driefontein Village, in the same ward, for the delay caused by the way things were left in their village.

Affected houses are about 110 households. Processes to engage with the relevant stakeholders are at an advanced stage.

Words of condolences

It came to our attention that a child in Ward 13 drowned last Thursday.

We further realised that the body was recovered the following day. As if that was not enough, in Ward 17 another child drowned at the weekend.

At the time of writing of this viewpoint, the child had not been recovered.

The role of the SAPS with its divers is commended. The support of the community of this ward by vigilantly working against the clock and further supporting the family is highly appreciated.

These drownings are happening at a time when the municipality is going to embark on a programme to identify and capacitate the youth on diving.

The municipality is also going to be undertaking an awareness campaign on the dangers of the rivers to the relevant communities.

Library road shows

As the year is at the most critical stage, we have already intensified our approach to empower pupils over the importance and impact of library facilities with regards to their learning areas.

In partnership with the Department of Education, we co-ordinate more than 300 pupils with their teachers per zone to conduct this awareness campaign through staging activities such as spelling quizes, debates, crayoning and many more.

Participants and winners are awarded tokens relevant to education, hence the teachers are also adjudicators. Our mobile library truck has indeed been our major navigator throughout this programme.

Till we meet again.
