Abuse against women and children is one of the thorniest issues our society, and government in general, is faced with. It is important that the 16 Days Campaign is not viewed as a stand-alone event. It is another leg of the #356Days of Activism Campaign and #CountMeIn, which aims to mobilise members of society, especially men, to join hands with government in the fight to curb violence against women. It is on that note that the municipality has convened and will continue to convene a series of dialogues on violence against women and children in order to focus on the problem, further discuss the causes, and to find appropriate solutions.

Through the dialogue sessions, the municipality and its stakeholders have fruitfully interacted with community members who experience violence and abuse. Together, let us take action to support the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children campaign. As part of supporting the campaign, we are encouraged to wear a ribbon during the 16-day period: a white ribbon is a symbol of peace and symbolises a commitment to never commit or condone violence against women and children.

Over the years, we have been creating an enabling environment for our artists, and with some success. The fruits of this have shown, but we are quite mindful that this is not enough; a lot is yet to come. Having facilitated the formation of committees per genre, we are committed to playing a mentoring role in order to empower young artists.

It is on that note that for the first time Umzimkhulu Municipality will be hosting an event that showcases our artistic significance, through Maskandi and Isicathamiya.

As much this event is owned by, and is for the artists, our aim is to host it annually. This event will have three categories (Category A with 10 groups per genre, Category B with five groups per genre, and Category C with five groups per genre). Category A groups will get R3 500 each, Category B groups will be get R2 000 per group and Category C groups will get R1 500 per group. The event will be held on December 16 at Umzimkhulu TVET College.

Until we meet again.
